The message was from Richard Sorge. The last time this spy sent a warning, Stalin had thrown it in his intelligence chief's face, sneering: "There's this bastard in Japan who reports the invasion date as June 22. Are you suggesting I should believe him?"

That arrogance had cost Stalin 20 million Soviet lives. Because he didn't trust this German “Communist,” Hitler’s troops had crossed the border and torn through Soviet defenses like paper.

Now, with the Wehrmacht visible from the Kremlin towers, Sorge was writing again. If this new intel was true, if that drunk womanizer was actually to be trusted, he might just be the one to save this war.
