Stage One of Papamoa's Coastal Shared Pathway, a 3,000-meter path designed to make walking and cycling safer, is finally complete. Stage Two of the grand master plan will add an extra 500 meters heading south to connect to a broader network. This cycling solution is 50% funded by NZTA’s cycleway transport funds. It’s a fantastic asset for kids on bikes, park-and-ride users, and scooter enthusiasts.
Papamoa boasts 21 kilometers of coastal road (from Mount Pilot Bay to the end of Papamoa) and three surf clubs. With the Marine Parade cycle path now complete, the city has 6,000 meters of disconnected cycling infrastructure. Sadly, there are currently no plans to build an end-to-end network under the city's “Safer Streets” strategy for 15-minute journeys.
Tourism and commuter traffic dollars alone could easily justify completing the coastal road network and addressing the existing gaps. Back in 2020 and 2021, a coastal roads cycle network city plan was submitted, proposing low-cost interim road safety solutions (estimated at $130,000–$250,000) such as painted cycle lanes, intersection crossings, and safety awareness signs and campaigns. Unfortunately, this proposal was rejected by the Tauranga City Transport Team.
