In the 1960’s music scene in Vancouver, not many drummers were busier than Kat Hendrikse. Rob Frith and I interviewed this Vancouver drum legend in Nardwuar’s den in the basement of Neptoon Records. In the first of a two-part interview, Kat discusses his time with the Vancouver Playboys, the Tom Northcott Trio and playing on hit songs by Terry Jacks and the Poppy Family, including Which Way You Goin’ Billy and Seasons in the Sun. He recalls his musical roots, taking drum lessons from Duris Maxwell, and watching him play at the Elegant Parlour with Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, a band that included not only Maxwell, but Robbie King, Eddie Patterson and Tommy Chong. He also talks about opening for both the Jefferson Airplane and Led Zeppelin, and playing with the Vancouver Symphony when he was with the band Spring. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Vancouver music history.
