In today’s video, we are looking at this Hooke special edition Tank 300 shown at the 2025 Shanghai motor show. Key highlights are its engine, its upgraded drivetrain, and just overall styling changes. Hang around till the end for something wicked I saw at the show as well.
So what is this Hooke? I’m glad you asked, it is a 4wd park in China often compared to the Rubicon trail and Moab in America. It is a dry and rocky environment and potentially your idea of heaven if navigating through large rock steps and rock crawling is your thing. Approximately 100 km2 with over 70 tracks to choose from. Images found on Baidu.
I’ve been told GWM has built a Tank 300 together with Hooke 4WD Park and its trial masters. Although it looks fairly similar, there are a few significant differences to the drivetrain. Starting with the side, if you pay attention, you’ll notice the proportion is a bit off and you’d be right. The front axle has been moved forward over 20cm. Now with solid axle front end rather than independent this means there are a few mechanical benefits. Approach angle has been increased from 33 to around 40 degrees, you can easily increase that with even bigger tyres, the live axle as a design is also known to be stronger and more durable, you get more wheel travel, equipped with decoupling sway bar, and finally… you have more space in the engine bay area.
Now keep in mind, this front axle change increased approach angle, but reduced breakover angle which is why you see a pair of proper rock sliders across the wheel base. Remember this car was after all designed to conquer rocky environments.
In fact, this is so good, GWM has rated it the highest 4x4 rating in its internal system. The standard Tank 300 is considered a capable off-roader, but this Hooke Tank 300 is rated as an extreme off-road.
The car on display had some Cooper Discover 265/70 R18 tyres running a set of bead lock rims. However if you have a look at the vehicle, it will easily accommodate a set of 33” all terrains and with a lift, you can likely fit a set of 35” no problem! Suspension wise they remain coil sprung front and rear BUT they are adjustable nitro shocks with remote reservoir.
I am a huge fan of this new paint colour which loosely translates to Sandune yellow. Cosmetically the front and rear bumper along with the fender flares have also seen an update.
Mechanically it runs GWM’s twin turbo v6 putting out 265kW and 500Nm of torque mated to GWM’s in house 9 speed automatic.
Check out this accessories wall where jerry cans, recovery gear, wheels, are on display but what caught my attention is THIS! It is an absolute work of art. I don’t know the exact numbers but look at the ground clearance you gain. And check out how beefy everything is! In case you don’t know, this is called a portal axle and is arguably the best way to lift your car with additional gearing for monstrous 37 - 40” tyres. Imagine these on the Hooke Tank 300!
So what do you think? I want this in Australia SOOOO bad it’s not funny! Let me know what you think and where you would take this Tank 300 Hooke edition? Thank you very much for watching and if you enjoyed the content please like and subscribe. Catch you next time!
