The Ghost Lights of Silver Cliff Cemetery

Do you believe in ghosts? If so, I have a ghastly tale of Colorado history to impart. A tall tale of legend that extends to present day. Far from the populated cities and deep in a vast mountain valley of Southern Colorado, there exists an old cemetary. A resting place for the dead that has endured since the inception of this old mining town in the late 1870s.

On one particulary cold and clear evening over a century ago, a group of miners passed through the graveyard for the return home, after a bachelor party for one of their friends. The path was a shortcut, easier to navigate in contrast to the desolate planes that surround the local town. While passing through the cemetary, the miners saw something. Something unnatural. Above the towering gravestones, uncanny spheres of white and blue lights floated and beckoned, seemingly taunting the unsuspecting men. As the glowing orbs of light danced in the night within the graveyard, the men made haste back to town frightened and disheveled. Convinced they were spirited away by the dead occupants of the burial ground, the story became local legend and over time the origins of the event became myth.

For nearly 150 years, the local legend of the ghost lights has persisted in this near forgotten town of mining history. It is here, another cold and clear night in present day October, where I decided to ponder the legend myself. To sit and observe in the cold dark night, alone, and chilled to the bone would be a tall order and a test of my resilience to tell a story of rich and haunted history. What is more, I would spend the night in my truck nearby and over the course of the evening, I would attempt to invoke the legend of the ghost lights of Silver Cliff Cemetary…
