About Venerable Sayalay Susīla
In 2014, Venerable Sayalay Susīla founded Samatha-Vipassana Meditation Centre (正勤乐住禅林) in Penang, Malaysia, where she currently serves as the abbess.
Venerable Susīla was born in 1963 in Pahang, Malaysia. She began practicing insight meditation during her university years. In 1987, she graduated with a degree in Mass Communication from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang. After graduation, she worked as a secondary school teacher for one and a half years. However, feeling increasingly discontent with worldly affairs and wishing to deepen her spiritual practice, she resigned from her position and devoted herself entirely to intensive meditation for three consecutive years.
In 1991, at the age of 28, she received novice ordination at the Buddhist Wisdom Centre in Penang. Six months later, she traveled to Myanmar and undertook intensive meditation under the guidance of the renowned meditation master Venerable U Pandita for about three years.
In 1994, wishing to learn the concentration (samatha) meditation method, she turned to another eminent Burmese master, the Venerable Pa-Auk Sayadaw. She remained in the Pa-Auk Forest Monastery in Myanmar for 14 years. During this time, she diligently studied and practiced meditation, and also undertook deep studies of the Abhidhamma and Pāli scriptures, from which she greatly benefited. She also served as Pa-Auk Sayadaw's English and Chinese translator in Myanmar and abroad.
Since 2000, Venerable Susīla has been teaching Abhidhamma in respected institutions in Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, and Taiwan.
To benefit more beings and broaden her understanding, she also studied various meditation traditions in Myanmar, including those of Shwe Oo Min Sayadaw, Mogok Sayadaw, Sayagyi U Ba Khin, and S.N. Goenka. Her broad and deep exposure to these diverse methods has made her an exceptionally skillful teacher, able to present the subtleties of the Buddha’s teachings in a clear and straightforward manner. In particular, she presents the profound teachings of Abhidhamma not as abstract philosophy, but grounded in direct meditative experience.
After leaving Myanmar, she began independently researching the scriptures and focusing on the practice and teaching of the Satipaṭṭhāna (Four Foundations of Mindfulness).
Her Dhamma teachings have reached audiences in the United States, Canada, Eastern Europe, Russia, Australia, India, China, Indonesia, Singapore, and her homeland, Malaysia. In 2015, she collaborated with Venerable Sanghasena to lead the first International Temporary Ordination Program in Ladakh, located in the Himalayas of northern India.
Venerable Susīla’s teachings are lively, precise, and unique, and are highly respected by her students. Remarkably, she is fluent in both Chinese and English, which allows her to effectively communicate the Dhamma to diverse audiences. She is also proficient in Burmese, Hokkien, and Malay.
