Therese de Goede, on a harpsichord built by Johannes Klinkhamer in 1973. Recorded by Andrea Friggi.
This suite by Froberger is one of the six included in the beautifully decorated Libro quarto (1656), presented to Ferdinand III. During a tour that lasted over three years, from 1650 to 1653, Froberger stayed in many cities, including Dresden, Brussels, Antwerp, and Paris, and he must have played many different harpsichords, including Instruments built by Ruckers. (The instrument shown in this video was built in Antwerp (1640) and is now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. (The red chinoiserie is an 18th-century decoration).
The French character of Froberger’s dances show the so-called style brisé, the lute-type figurations, and his various manners of chord-breaking may serve as a model for French 17th-century continuo accompaniment.
