Arctic - Kraemerpynten beach at Kvitøya island

When we were planning our Arctic trip, one big part of the excitement was the possibility of seeing a polar bear. Wildlife being, well... wild, and not on our schedule, nothing is guaranteed. So there was always this uncertainty whether we would see one or not. The question was answered when we visited Kvitøya, the remote easternmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, and therefore, of the entire kingdom of Norway. It was a very atmospheric morning shrouded with fog and as we approached the island, there it was... our very first polar bear lying on the shoreline! What an indescribable feeling being so close to this apex predator! We were really happy with our first encounter, but we were ecstatic to see another polar bear later on which actually got up and came down to the waterline, looking at us and sniffing the air! What an amazing and unforgettable experience at this gorgeous Arctic island!
