Word analogy questions are a part of the Mental Ability Test (MAT) in NMMS and other competitive exams. They test a student’s ability to identify relationships between pairs of words. In these questions, a pair of words is given, followed by another word, and the student must find a word related to it in the same way. For example: Bird : Nest :: Bee : Hive, meaning a bird lives in a nest just as a bee lives in a hive. Analogies can be based on relationships like synonyms, antonyms, functions, cause–effect, tool–user, or part–whole. They help in developing verbal reasoning and logical connection skills.
Students should carefully understand the relation in the first pair before applying it to the second.
Common types include object–place, person–profession, animal–young one, and tool–action. Such questions improve vocabulary, reasoning, and comprehension. Practicing word analogy questions regularly helps students gain speed and accuracy in exams like NMMS, NTSE, and Olympiads.
