Alfred Grünfeld’s "Paraphrase über Walzer-Motive aus J. Strauss’ Aschenbrödel, Op. 52" (1907) is one of those dazzling showcases of Viennese waltz and romantic piano virtuosity. Performed by concert pianist Nareh Arghamanyan and captured on a Bösendorfer 280VC at the Bösendorfer Klaviermanufaktur, 200 years after Strauss' 200th birthday (October 25, 1825), 129 years after Johann Strauss II himself received a Bösendorfer Grand Piano as a personal gift.

Grünfeld (1852–1924): born in Prague and later one of the most celebrated pianists of fin-de-siècle Vienna, famous for his bel canto phrasing. As Vienna’s quintessential salon virtuoso, he moved in the same artistic circles as Johannes Brahms and was friends with Johann Strauss II. Strauss dedicated his concert waltz Frühlingsstimmen (Voices of Spring), Op. 410 (1882), to Grünfeld. Grünfeld, in turn, championed Strauss’s music in his transcriptions, paraphrases, and encores.

In 1898, Strauss began work on a full-length ballet, Aschenbrödel (Cinderella). He left extensive sketches and even a complete piano score, but died before he could complete orchestration of the work. In his final months, Strauss invited close friends to musical soirees at his home, where he played excerpts from Aschenbrödel. Grünfeld is likely to have heard these private performances firsthand, absorbing Strauss’s intentions for phrasing, nuance, and charm. His 1907 Konzert-paraphrase reflects this: Nothing is hurried, tempos breathe with unforced Viennese ease, and the melodies unfold with the natural elegance that defined the golden age of Vienna’s musical culture. Grünfeld’s transcription captures not only the waltz magic of Strauss, but also the tenderness and grace of a musical world soon to vanish.

Inspired by Grünfeld’s own unsurpassed interpretation, her performance revives the brilliance, charm, and unmistakable Viennese spirit that animated Grünfeld’s era. Alfred Grünfeld (1852–1924): geboren in Prag und später einer der gefeiertsten Pianisten des Wiener Fin de Siècle, bekannt für sein lyrisches Belcanto-Spiel. Brahms nannte Grünfeld den “Meister des Wiener Salons”. Grünfeld, Brahms und Strauß bewegten sich in denselben musikalischen Zirkeln. Und Strauß widmete Grünfeld seinen berühmten Walzer Frühlingsstimmen, Op. 410.

1898 begann Strauß mit der Arbeit an einem Ballett: Aschenbrödel. Zwar verstarb er, bevor er die Orchestrierung des Werks vollenden konnte, aber es ist wahrscheinlich, dass Grünfeld, als Gast zu Hause bei Strauß, im Rahmen privater musikalischen Soirees, Strauß selbst Auszüge aus Aschenbrödel hat spielen hören, und so aus erster Hand die intendierte Phrasierung, das Rubato und den unverwechselbaren Wiener Charme in sich aufgenommen hat. Diese Nähe spiegelt sich in dieser Paraphrase wider: ruhige Tempi, atmende Walzerlinien, leuchtende Eleganz und der Flair der Wiener Welt des Fin de Siècle.

Bösendorfer Artist Nareh Arghamanyan lässt diese Tradition weiterleben. Ihre Interpretation ist inspiriert von Grünfelds eigener legendären Aufnahme. Mit ihrem singenden Ton, schimmerndem Anschlag und unverkennbar wienerischem Timbre lässt Nareh diese „Aschenputtel“-Fantasie für Hörerinnen und Hörer auf der ganzen Welt neu erstrahlen.
