The X-Caddis was created in the early 1980s (?) by Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies. It's a quintessential guide fly. What do I mean? This is a pattern that's both easier to tie AND more effective than the pattern on which it is based, the classic Elk Hair Caddis, at least when it comes to actually imitating hatching caddisflies rather than serving as a rough water attractor or prospecting pattern.
My own variation is slightly different than most commercial versions of the X-Caddis: I use a short-shank hook and a rougher body, both of which further help match emerging caddis, in my opinion.
Our summer caddis hatches in 2024 were excellent on the Yellowstone River, the best in at least 10 years. With an outlook for excellent water conditions for July 2025, odds are the hatches will be good this year too. Whip up a few of these, or book a guided trip for July if you'd rather use mine...
