Originally, a rendition of the Echo from Bach's French Overture in B minor had been requested by santhienpsr3935. However, in order to avoid potential future bloat on playlists I decided to have it and the entire rest of the suite on one video.
The French Overture in B minor, aside from being the longest of Bach's multi-movement keyboard works, is quite a distinctive piece in Bach's keyboard music output.
First off, one should point out that its confusing name is an unfortunate misnomer. Only the first movement is an overture in the French style, with the remaining movements being a series of Baroque dances. Thus, the piece is more accurately a suite.
Secondly, the piece was composed with a two-manual harpsichord in mind. A sort of precursor of the fortepiano, this instrument had the innovative ability to be played both loudly and softly. Bach took advantage of this innovation by writing different dynamic markings throughout several movements of the piece.
He even went one step beyond by composing an additional, non-dance movement at the end, called Echo. This unique piece, by fully taking advantage of the two-manual harpsichord's unique capabilities, sought to replicate the echo phenomenon in a Baroque fashion.
