Jaswant Singh Rawat was an Indian soldier of the 4th Garhwal Rifles, who is revered for his heroic role during the Indo-China War of 1962. His story is legendary in the Indian Armed Forces, particularly for his actions in defending Nuranang (also known as Jaswant Garh) in Arunachal Pradesh.
In November 1962, during the Sino-Indian War, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat and his comrades were tasked with defending a position in the Tawang sector against the Chinese Army. When the Chinese launched a major offensive, many of his fellow soldiers either retreated or were killed. However, Rawat decided to stay behind and continued fighting. Along with two local Monpa girls who supported him, Rawat managed to hold off the Chinese forces for three days.
The legend says that Jaswant Singh set up multiple rifles at different positions, firing from various points to create the illusion of a larger force. When the Chinese finally discovered that only one man was holding them off, they were both impressed and angered. Eventually, he was surrounded and killed.
After the battle, the Chinese reportedly returned Rawat's body to the Indian side with honors, impressed by his bravery. The Indian Army posthumously awarded him the Maha Vir Chakra, one of India's highest gallantry awards.
Today, Jaswant Singh Rawat is honored as a martyr and hero. The site where he fought, near the Tawang sector in Arunachal Pradesh, is now known as "Jaswant Garh," and there is a memorial where soldiers and civilians pay their respects. There's a tradition in the Indian Army that Jaswant Singh is treated as if he is still serving, with his "duties" being carried out every day as a tribute to his sacrifice.
