The reproductive system has one main purpose: to create the special cells needed to begin new life.
In males, these cells are called sperm.
In females, they are called eggs or ova.
During reproduction, one sperm joins with one egg.
This joining is called fertilisation, and it is the very first step that can grow into a baby.
As puberty begins, the body starts preparing for this stage of life.
A boy’s body begins to produce sperm,
and a girl’s body begins to develop eggs.
Girls also experience menstruation, usually about a year after puberty starts.
Menstruation happens when an unfertilised egg and the lining of the uterus leave the body, causing a small amount of bleeding.
It normally happens once a month, although cycles can be irregular at first.
If an egg is fertilised, menstruation does not occur.
This entire process is the body’s natural way of preparing for adulthood and the possibility of creating new life in the future.
