Julian & Jake found that one colony with it's newly mated queen is thriving, however the other is hopelessly queenless and a laying worker situation has developed. A frame of 1 day old eggs from another beekeeper is introduced in the hope that a queen cell will be developed. The original hive was also moved away so that hopefully any laying workers are unable to find their way back to the original position (they
wouldn't have orientated to the original hive position as they weren't flying bees). J&J feel that this strategy might have a 50:50 chance of working.......fingers crossed!!!!!
J&J SINCE REALISED THAT THIS INTERVENTION WAS VERY UNLIKELY TO WORK. LAYING WORKERS ARE PROBABLY STILL FORAGING AND ORIENTATED TO THE HIVE POSITION. THE CORRECT METHOD WOULD HAVE BEEN TO INTRODUCE EGGS FROM ANOTHER COLONY……ALTHOUGH LAYING WORKER IS A NOTORIOUSLY TRICK SITUATION TO REVERSE!!!! THIS WAS A VALUABLE LEARNING EXPERIENCE 😀
