Dummy boards are used to replace a frame and create a bit more space in the brood box, making it easier to manipulate frames whilst doing a hive inspection. The removed frame does need to be replaced by a dummy board otherwise the bees will fill the empty space with brace comb.
The narrower dummy board is removed 1st at the beginning of the inspection, and this avoids any bees being rolled or even crushed! The rest of the frames can then be inspected.
Julian & Jake have been having difficulty squeezing in the final (12th) frame into the brood box, and this also makes it hard to remove it again without rolling bees. They have found it really easy to make a dummy board using an empty frame.
