Poetry has strong roots in oral traditions, when people wanted to carry and spread messages and stories that could not, at that time, be written down. Now, its common perception is that of a dead academic subject, and most people do not ever revisit it after compulsory English classes. But poetry, and especially spoken-word or "slam" poetry, has immense potential, to change things for the poet as well as for people around her. Not only is it an outlet for expression, but it can be the best way to bring together a community.
Manasi Nene is the founder of the Pune Poetry Slam, a collective of artists, poets and organizers holding performance poetry events in Pune. She loves the crossroads of art, activism and the DIY ethic, which was a major inspiration behind the Slam. She is currently studying at the Foundation for Liberal and Management Education, Pune, and hopes to become a writer, journalist and/or professional rollercoaster tester.
