When it comes to ageing, we often focus on frailty, disease, or decline. But what if the real challenge isn’t physical at all? What if it’s the bias embedded in the way we teach, talk, and think about older adults? Dr Samantha Heath explores how ageism quietly shapes healthcare professionals’ education, from the case studies we write to the clinical placements we prioritise. She reveals how stereotypes of older people as frail, forgetful, or dependent influence nursing curricula and, ultimately, the quality of care delivered. Drawing on insights from student experiences and curriculum reviews, Samantha shows why dismantling these biases is critical for preparing a workforce ready to meet the needs of a rapidly ageing global population. Her message is clear: if we want future health professionals to provide care that values dignity and inclusion, we must start by changing the narrative in everyday society. .
