The falls are situated on the Elands River in Mpumalanga province, on the escarpment where the Highveld meets the Lowveld.

The waterfall at the historic town of Waterval Boven (now Emgwenya), South Africa, is the Elands Falls, a 75-meter cascade on the Elands River. You can view the falls from a platform just outside the town, which is located on the escarpment edge.
The area is also known for its historic NZASM railway tunnel and Five Arch Bridge, along with various hiking trails, rock climbing, and fly fishing opportunities.
The original name, Waterval Boven, translates to "above the waterfall," referring to the Elands River Waterfall.
A viewing platform just outside the town offers the best vantage point to see the 75-meter high waterfall.
