In 2025, the Washington State Fair celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Classic Coaster. Designed by John Miller and built by Frank Pyfer in 1935 as the Roller Coaster, it was originally built as a side-friction coaster. In 1950, the ride was rebuilt and transformed into a flanged wood coaster by Walker LeRoy and received the Prior & Church trains from the former Giant Dipper at Happyland Park. In 1970, the Roller Coaster was badly damaged by another fire, but was rebuilt and reopened just in time for the fair that year. In 2001, the ride was renamed the Coaster Thrill Ride. The ride was completely rebuilt and restored by John Hinde from 2009 to 2014. In 2013, the ride was renamed the Classic Coaster. On September 7th, 2013, the ride was designated an ACE Coaster Landmark. The Classic Coaster features the last trains from Prior & Church still in operation and is one of only 10 surviving John Miller designs, one of only 5 surviving flanged wooden coasters, and the last surviving fairground wooden coaster. Enjoy our musical tribute as we celebrate the Classic Coaster's 90th anniversary.
