"I’m Erin Hempen, founder and CEO of With Change In Mind, a nonprofit I started in 2011 after seeing firsthand how traditional volunteer travel often misses the mark, or even causes harm. For the past 15+ years, I’ve worked in Malawi building schools, launching after-school programs, and leading a daily meal program that has served more than 400,000 meals to children.But my work isn’t about “projects.” It’s about people, partnerships, and pushing back against the idea that service is about saving others. I believe service should strengthen communities, not stroke egos. That’s why I speak openly about the flaws of voluntourism, and what it looks like when service is done with integrity.I’ve led dozens of service trips, spoken on stages, and am currently preparing my TEDx talk: “Voluntourism is broken, but there’s a better way.” My story includes everything from a tire flying off my car on a Malawian dirt road to watching children dream up programs bigger than I imagined.
