I grew up hunting. My father taught me to respect the woods—its silence, its unpredictability, and the things that can watch you without ever making a sound. When I had my son, Ethan, I wanted him to inherit the same connection. So every November, I’d take a week off work, meet up with my old hunting buddy Mark, and head for a leased cabin deep near the Adirondacks. It was remote enough that once you stepped outside at night, the dark felt alive.
We arrived that Sunday afternoon. The forest was cold, heavy with the smell of wet earth and pine. The cabin’s woodstove was barely warming up when Mark and I decided to go for a quick scouting walk before sunset. That’s when I noticed the first thing that felt wrong.
