Presented by Greg Paige, Director of Horticulture, and Blake Wentley, Education Assistant with camera work by Evan Villani, Research Technician, JC Raulston Arboretum on September 24, 2025.
Sometimes, even the best trees outgrow their welcome—dropping limbs too close to the house, seeding all over the place, or just no longer fitting the space or your vision. When a tree stops serving the garden, it might be time to let it go.
In this episode of the Midweek Program, Greg and Sophia will guide you through the sometimes tricky—but always important—process of replacing trees. You’ll learn how to recognize when it’s time to remove a tree, how to do it safely, and what to consider when choosing what comes next.
From sneaky soil problems to the pros and cons of different plant sizes, they’ll help you avoid common missteps—and maybe even feel good about starting fresh.
This program was originally presented live online. Tune into our midweek program live on Zoom, Wednesdays at 3:00pm eastern time. Here's the link: https://jcra.ncsu.edu/midweek/
