Many people wrongly believe that being authentic is just about being true to yourself and putting your own truth at the head of your priorities, even if this means that you may not be able to be close to other people any more. In this way one person’s authenticity is another person’s narcissism. Authenticity as a path requires a great deal more than focusing on your own truth. It is about opening yourself to truth as it is hidden in the myriad of different experiences different individuals have of the world. No one person can know what the Truth is, but each of us can have an attitude of searching for truth. We can only do this in humility and with modesty about our own inner truth. Our own truth is the starting point on a much longer journey.
