UL Research Institutes' Annual Research Symposium showcases the power of collaboration among world-class institutions tackling pressing global challenges to benefit society.
Discussing ULRI’s second annual symposium in 2024, Interim President and Chief Research Officer Chris Cramer, Ph.D., highlights the event’s role in fostering new partnerships and influencing research directions.
Director of Partnerships Deepa Shankar notes that none of today’s challenges can be solved by a single entity and underscores the importance of bringing together diverse minds to collectively address human health and safety. The symposium enables a holistic view of challenges the world faces by bringing together top minds from a variety of disciplines, she says.
Looking ahead, Shankar says ULRI’s third annual symposium will focus on the human-digital interface, exploring digital safety and artificial intelligence challenges. These efforts reflect UL Research Institutes' commitment to advancing safety science through innovative collaborations, working for a safer world for us all.
Cristi Bell-Huff, Ph.D., our Chemical Insights Research Institute’s senior director of partnerships and outreach, highlights the impact of the collaborative efforts made possible by the 2024 symposium.
Held at Georgia Tech, the symposium brought together diverse stakeholders and experts to tackle global challenges in safety and health. For CIRI, Bell-Huff says, this collaboration led to the creation of the “Clear the Air: Wildfires and Human Health” website, which provides resources to protect community health during and after wildfires. The symposium also enabled the development of a guidance document and toolkit for communities, further amplifying the impact of safety science, Bell-Huff says. These resources have been widely shared by additional organizations, including government agencies, helping to ensure that crucial information reaches those who need it most during wildfires.
The symposium exemplifies how partnerships can enhance outreach and maximize the real-world impact of research initiatives.
