Comrades 2019 - 1 Day, 2 Very Different Races - Ross' Silver & Mich's Bill Rowan Medal Attempts

The 2019 Comrades "Up-Run" - an 87km journey from Durban to Maritzburg - the largest ultramarathon in the world.

(Last weekend was meant to be Comrades 2020 - which inspired me to finally finish our 2019 video)

It was a very different race for Michelle and I. Despite dual personal bests - one of us smashed our target, while the other one crashed and burned!

The route is 87km of relentlessness, the hills never stop coming and if you do not respect this course it will chew you up and spit you out. The first 42km are the hardest 42 you will find anywhere.

Could not have asked for a better support crew for Comrades. So blessed! Thank you team - we know that seconding is as stressful and tiring as the running! Sizonqoba! We triumph together! Love you guys

This wife of mine continues to amaze me. She had one of the best runs out there, smiled all the way, consistent as hell and finished with a new PB of 8:38 and in the top 3% of all women! My superhero never stops blowing my mind. I love you Mich ❤️

Want to know how NOT to run a Comrades Silver Medal (sub 7h30m) on the up run ? Over the first 50km, where you will find some of the toughest climbing you will ever experience, break your fastest ever 50km time (4:55 m/km). Then do a couple 9 minute kms in the last 37 to balance the overall pace out to 5:31 m/km over the full 87km 😂 When I got to half way 4 minutes ahead of schedule I had a feeling I had overcooked it. The wheels came off and the silver dream was over.

Despite not achieving my goal of a silver medal - I'm still very happy with my back to back Bill Rowans, a new personal best of 8h02m (52 minutes off last year), finishing top 6% overall and some MASSIVE learnings which, hopefully, will convert into invaluable experience.

I can't wait to return to have another go at it! We live. We hurt. We learn.
