There have been many famous, haunting cases of demon possession & exorcisms in recent history. And while demon possession & exorcism may feel like a recent Hollywood invention, demons & their lore are older than dirt. Tonight, we honor the fact that every high-profile, blockbuster exorcism, as well as each real-life exorcism & demon possession, was inspired by the demonology & exorcisms performed by the Ancient Mesopotamians. Yes, the chilling exorcism of Annaliese Michel, the exorcism in Scary Movie 2, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, the exorcism of Anna Ecklund & of course the exorcism in the eponymous documentary (The Exorcist) trace the source of their demonic possession inspiration back to the Ancient Mesopotamians. In fact, the Ancient Mesopotamian demon Pazuzu makes a cameo in The Exorcist & the spider walk in The Exorcist was first performed by the evil demon Lamashtu down the steps of the (then) world’s tallest ziggurat. (This is precisely why the possessed suddenly start speaking in ancient tongues.) Truly, there is nothing new under the sun, because just as today, the Ancient Mesopotamians believed that most illnesses, diseases, afflictions (from the minor tooth ache to brain tumors), misfortune, famines, hurricanes, heatwaves & heartache are caused by demons.
The Scenario: You’re an upright citizen of ancient Sumer. Naturally, you’ve realized that your fever, chest pains & chills must be the symptoms of demon possession. So, instead of making an appointment with an ASMR doctor for an ASMR exam, you’ve come to see the high priestess at the Temple of Eridu to perform a standard, run of the mill exorcism so you can get back to lugging monumental stones around, harvesting wheat, weaving baskets - or whatever it is you do.
In this video, I’ve tried to remain true to the documented exorcism rituals of the Ancient Mesopotamians & their beliefs about demon possession & demonology. I plan to add more detailed information & sources to this description in the next few days to serve as a brief guide to Mesopotamian demonology. There are a few anachronisms in this video, but if you’re wondering, the background image used to create a temple ambience is Inanna, the ancient Mesopotamian goddess of love, war & fertility. The smoke is intended to be evocative of incense—to this day the descendants of the ancient Mesopotamians have not lost their penchant for filling rooms with incense (I can attest to this having attended Syrian Orthodox services with my grandmother). Also, I mispronounce Hanpi (a demon’s name) in this video. Apologies for this. Overall, this video was not only inspired by my fascination with Ancient Mesopotamia—but also my belief in the power of rituals (whether you take them literally or not).
Hopefully, the rituals performed by ISP will get a lot more immersive & less lofi in days to come, with the acquisition of a new camera this week (as if you couldn’t tell, I’ve shot every one of these vids on an outdated smartphone). I’m really excited about this new development & looking forward to a level up in PV. (Fingers crossed & prayers to Gula, goddess of unwrinkled greenscreens, the war against climate change & 4k video, this will be my last sh*tty quality video ever.)
This ASMR exorcism is intended as historical exploration for either metaphorical or literal readings of the phenom of demon possession. Whether you feel you’re possessed by real demons or not, I hope it offers some catharsis / peace / relaxation. I am not a board-certified exorcist nor do I play one on TV, so the “therapeutic” value of this vid is very limited & professional help is always the best option when you’re in crisis.

[Speaking of natural “disasters” (a heatwave), we are in the throes of some torturous temperatures that blew in straight from one of the 9 circles of Hell, the kind of temperatures that overheat computers causing cooling fans to kick up & making it impossible to shoot without having ceiling fans running. I’m not satisfied with the audio on this video—the soundscape isn’t as clear or as complex as I’d planned, so I may reshoot this when it finally cools off.]
If you’ve read this far or any part of these “liner notes,” I’d like to offer you the deepest level of gratitude anyone could ever possibly feel. Thank you for being here & thank you for being You. You count, you matter. (If you didn't, then the gallus / the demons wouldn't bother with you.)

(I'd love feedback on whether you find the jewelry & writing with stones sounds appealing or appalling.)
