The Stockton & Darlington Railway first opened on 27th September 1825, with the Robert Stephenson and Company Locomotion No. 1 hauling the ‘Experiment’ car and a rake of coal wagons between Shildon and Stockton-on-Tees via Darlington.

This historic journey opened the worlds first true steam-powered passenger carrying railway and transformed how the world traded, travelled, and communicated, linking places, people, communities, and ideas, ultimately transforming the world we live in as rail networks spread throughout the country and made destinations accessible, giving birth to the modern railways and infrastructure which have evolved and continued to evolve to what we now have in Britain today.

2025 has seen the overarching theme of  Railway200, a year-long, nationwide, partnership-led campaign celebrating 200 years of the modern railway, aiming to inspire a new generation of pioneering talent to choose a career in rail, while encouraging communities, railways, and other groups to get involved and lots of events and preserved railways across the UK have payed homage to Railway200 throughout the year, but it is significantly this weekend, today, 200 years to the day on this date, the 27th September, which marks the actual bi-centenary of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington railway!

So to celebrate, enjoy a definitive whistle up starring locomotives of all shapes and sizes, from mainline and heritage lines across the country all proudly sounding out to mark the bicentenary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway and the birth of modern railways!
