From Ron Warren Newsletter, June 2025
‘Sometimes, I tell my students, especially those coming from a Euro-Classical background, that notation is not music. It is a recipe for re-creating music. Some recipes are more detailed than others. If you look at the score for a Beethoven String Quartet or a Stravinsky Ballet, you will see every pitch and duration specifically notated. Every articulation, dynamic level, tempo change, almost every intended nuance in the music is indicated in some way. If you look at a chart or lead sheet by Mile Davis, you might see just a melody and some chord changes. In some places, you might even see a simple suggestion like “Play in Dorian Mode for 32 bars”.
The music comes first. The notation is just a way of communicating to other musicians how to re-create the music. Often, music that is more fixed requires more detailed notation. Music that can morph more from one performance to the next or music that invites improvisation often requires less detailed notation.
For the Morning Star, Evening Star songbook, less was better.’
