How will architecture evolve in the Anthropocene age?
In this episode, Architect Marcs Cruz shares how biological systems can reshape the future of design. Where the core of our systems will be biological, not digital or mechanical. He shares why we must rethink how we design, and build, to survive the changing environment. Cruz quotes the architect Bruce Goff, reminding us that “we are at the beginning of an epoch, not the end.
Learn how to design architecture that grows and ages with nature, and how buildings can evolve with weathering, aging, microbes, and natural integration. Cruz also shares insights into three scales of design: the smallest scale - materials and textures of buildings, the medium scale - how surfaces interact with water and growth, and the larger tectonic scale - where architecture becomes part of the ecosystem.
He shared about his project, Studio Biocene, an interdisciplinary research lab that reimagines how to bring biological systems to architecture. Rooted in the idea that the biological origins must be taken seriously in the Anthropocene age. Some projects under studio Biocene are Impact Printing with Robots and the Indus Wall Project.
