Prelude - 0:00
Fugue - 3:55
The 7th entry in the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier collection, featuring a lot of dense contrapuntal writing and chromaticism. The prelude is particularly interesting. It's not so uncommon that it's split in three distinct parts, but it is uncommon that - after the first part introducing a motif and the second part (bar 10) introducing a second motif based on a syncopation, the third part of the prelude (bar 25) is a full-fledged four-part fugue with two subjects emanating from these two motifs. It's even a longer and much harder to perform (and in my opinion more interesting) fugue than the "official" fugue that follows, which is also lovely and impeccably fashioned.
