Carl Craig emerged as a leading figure in Detroit’s second wave of techno during the late 1980s. Known as “C2” or Designer Music, Carl Craig began experimenting with sounds on a dual-deck cassette recorder after being inspired by Derrick May’s radio show on Detroit’s WJLB. This DIY beginning foreshadowed the innovation and independence that would define his career.
Open is a UK-based record label founded and run by Jim Masters in the 1990s. It operated as an underground offshoot of the Ministry of Sound, focusing on deeper, more eclectic sounds across house, techno, disco, and afro-influenced styles. Masters also provided A&R services and was instrumental in licensing and re-releasing US house and techno gems, while promoting UK artists like DJ Harvey and Glen Gunner. The label is known for curating influential compilations such as the Late Night Sessions series.
