The history of grilled rice balls dates back to ancient times, with its origins believed to have begun during the Warring States period in Japan.
It is said that the warlord Uesugi Kenshin, during battles, would grill and eat rice balls that had become cold and hard by skewering them on the tip of his sword, thus giving rise to the tradition.
