For our second excursion of the day to the remote Kvitøya island of the Svalbard archipelago we visit the historic Andréeneset headland. We saw quite a few polar bears, but all from a distance. We also were lucky to have a pod of walruses swimming not far from our tenders. Walruses of course do that everyday, but it was a really wonderful feeling to see them in the wild with our own eyes. The most special part of our visit though, was being close to the exact spot where the remains of the Andrée Expedition were found. The legendary explorer and his two companions set out in a hydrogen balloon in 1897 to be the first to reach the North Pole. Nothing was heard from them for 33 years, until their bodies were found frozen at this inhospitable piece of land. Every time I read their story or see the "Flight of the Eagle" movie, it will bring me back to this experience at this unique island!
