Raffaele Calace (1863-1934)
Notturno, Cielo Stellato Op. 186 for mandola
Eugenio Palumbo, mandola
Notturno, Cielo Stellato Op. 186 was written during the final years of Raffaele Calace’s life and reflects the intimate, melancholic character of his late works, such as the XV Prelude and the Gran Preludio. Its minor-key language and suspended atmosphere seem to gaze toward the horizon of life, combining meditation with a subtle restlessness. The nocturne form, imbued with lyricism and quiet unrest, places Calace firmly within the Romantic tradition, where the contemplation of a starry sky becomes a silent dialogue with fate.
For this recording, I chose to perform the piece on the mandola, almost by chance, as I still had the instrument in hand from a previous session. Yet its deeper, warmer tone seemed to capture more fully the reflective spirit and emotional depth of this final gem in Calace’s repertoire.
Recorded in « Assolo Produzioni », Genzano di Roma (Italy) on 25 August 2025
