Please join us for a talk by Dr. Carroll Estes, a pioneer and public sociologist on the political economy of aging. The focus of the lecture will take a look at the Political Economy of Aging as a “systemic view” that assumes old age can be “understood only in the context of social conditions and issues of the larger social order. Political economy analysis provides strategies to effectively improve the health and life chances of all older adults.
Carroll L. Estes is Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) where she founded and directed the campus-wide Institute for Health & Aging (1979-1998), and chaired the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (1981-1992) in the School of Nursing. Dr Estes is a member of the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and past president of the Gerontological Society of America. She is a recent recipient of the 2019-2020 Constantine Panunzio Distinguished Emeriti Award.
