Located in the county of Northamptonshire, and around 12 miles west of Northampton, is the town of Daventry.
Geographically, Daventry is situated a few miles west of both the Roman Road known as Watling Street (or the A5 in more modern terms), and the M1, close to the point where the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire all converge.
Owing to its location near Watling Street, Daventry had a thriving coaching inn industry during the stagecoach era prior to the arrival of the railways. Passengers travelling between London, Birmingham, Chester etc would stop here for a break while the horses were changed. Other industries associated with the town historically include wool, leather tanning, brewing and shoemaking.
At the eastern end of the town centre is the Church of the Holy Cross. This is a rare example of mid-18th century Georgian church design, having been built in its entirety during the 1750s. The church is Grade I listed.
In 1888 a railway station opened in Daventry courtesy of the London and North Western Railway. This formed part of the Weedon to Leamington Spa branch line. The station closed to passengers in 1958, and to freight in 1963. Today, public transport to Daventry consists of direct buses from Northampton, Rugby and various other nearby locations.
