Welcome to “RCA is the IDEAL Cassette Recorder – Model YZB522S”! This video is an exploration of the preservation of a vintage cassette tape recorder that was most likely built for the RCA Corporation by a Japanese tape recorder company.
But which one?
In this video we’ll explore the giveaway – the mechanical transport and we will see another video INSIDE this video that explains what makes this RCA cassette recorder so IDEAL. It may surprise you, but ardent fans of ClydeSight Channel may guess the answer early!
ClydeSight got this cassette tape recorder from E-Bay as a DOA for a couple of reasons.
FIRST - I am always on the lookout for INTERESTING looking and designed U.S. consumer grade tape recorders – the odd ones, the unusual, and the bizarre – to share with fans of ClydeSight Channel on YouTube. I was alive when these machines were introduced to the buying public. I saw them in the stores, saw the ads, saw how well or poorly they sold in the stores because I WAS THERE. This vintage audio technology has long been abandoned, but I can preserve it for future generations with the accuracy of actually having been there when these wonders (and some of these tape recorders DO make one wonder!) of auduio technology first sprang into sound.
SECOND - I like the challenge of an E-BAY DOA because it gives me the opportunity to explore in depth the interesting and creative designs of these vintage tape recorders.
The RCA YBZ522S is no exception. It is an unusual, somewhat rare and cute machine, well engineered, and after decades of being ignored, it has jumped back to surprisingly good life, as you will hear in the demo section of the video.
