In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy will present on the physiology of gastrointestinal motility within the small intestine. We begin by examining the segmental contractions responsible for mixing chyme and optimizing nutrient absorption along the mucosal surface. We then discuss peristaltic waves that propel contents distally, emphasizing the roles of the myenteric and submucosal plexuses within the enteric nervous system and how these are influenced by parasympathetic and sympathetic inputs.

The lecture also explores specialized motility patterns such as the migrating motor complex (MMC), which functions during fasting to clear residual material and prevent bacterial overgrowth. Key hormonal regulators, including motilin, secretin, and CCK, are reviewed, along with their timing and physiological triggers.
