Although no formal permission was given, the district administration verbally permitted the BNP to hold the rally at the playground of Mymensingh Polytechnic Institute later that night, according to BNP organising secretary Syed Emran Saleh Prince.

To give security and to avoid hindrance on the way to the rally, several hundred BNP leaders and activists, who reached Mymensingh a day earlier, stayed at the rally ground on Friday night.

At the rally on Saturday, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said that while AL and police desperately tried to foil the rally, BNP people succeeded in holding it, dismissing all the ‘conspiracies’.

He claimed that over one lakh people joined the rally to say no to the Awami League.

The rally, organised by Mymensingh city unit BNP, formally began at around 2:00pm on the Polytechnic Institute premises, with an adequate number of police and other security officials deployed around the venue and various other points throughout the city to prevent any untoward incident.

The presence of BNP activists and supporters was seen even outside the venue, as the playground was filled by the beginning of what was the second divisional mass rally organised by the BNP.

The first divisional rally of the BNP was held in Chattogram on October 12.

The party is holding the rallies to press home various demands, including the resignation of the government, dissolving the current parliament, restoring the caretaker government system, unconditional release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and protesting the death of five of its leaders and activists in the recent movement against the hike in fuel and commodity prices.

New Age correspondent in Mymensingh reported that leaders and activists of AL’s front bodies — Bangladesh Chhatra League and Awami Juba League — had allegedly carried out an attack on the BNP people in Mymensingh on Friday night.English language tutoring
