SCI's Associate Director, David Brown covers the urgent necessity to minimise embodied carbon in all construction activities. Within structural steelwork design there are plenty of ways to contribute, from the basics of highly utilised members designed for realistic loading to the use of higher strength steel and semi-continuous design. If new construction is to proceed at all, designers are encouraged to embrace all opportunities to minimise the impact on the planet and to challenge anything less than best practice.
