La Praça D. Pedro IV, meglio conosciuta come Piazza del Rossio o semplicemente Rossio, è il centro nevralgico di Lisbona da sei secoli e si trova sul confine nord del quartiere Baixa. Prende il nome da Pietro IV del Portogallo.
Vi si sono svolte corride, festival e persino autodafé durante l'inquisizione spagnola. Oggi si assiste a occasionali comizi politici ed i suoi sobri edifici ospitano negozi di souvenir, gioiellerie e bar. Nella metà del XIX secolo fu piastrellata con mattonelle bianche e nere in modo da creare un andamento ondulante. Questo fu uno dei primi motivi decorativi delle piazze e strade di Lisbona.
Al centro della piazza si erge la statua di Pietro IV del Portogallo, primo imperatore del Brasile, alla cui base si notano quattro figure allegoriche rappresentanti le quattro virtù cardinali: la Giustizia, la Sapienza, la Fortezza e la Temperanza, qualità attribuite al Re-soldato.
Ci sono due strade collegate a Largo do Carmo e la cui toponomastica conserva l'antico nome.
La ripida e curvilinea Calçada do Carmo, anticamente chiamata Calçadinha do Carmo, scende da Largo do Carmo fino a Rossio ed è una delle strade più antiche della storica via che collega la collina di Carmo alla Baixa.
L'elevador de Santa Justa (in italiano: ascensore di Santa Giusta), anche conosciuto come Elevador do Carmo è uno dei monumenti della Baixa, il centro storico lisboneta. La biglietteria si trova dietro la torre, nella discesa della rua do Carmo. I passeggeri possono salire e scendere con l'ascensore, dentro a due eleganti cabine di legno con particolari di ottone.
Alto 45 metri, è costruito in ferro e decorato con quadrifore mentre in cima alla torre, alla quale si accede per una stretta scala a chiocciola, si trova la spianata di un locale con splendida vista sopra il Rossio, la Baixa e il Castello di São Jorge, situati sulla collina opposta, ed il fiume Tago e le rovine del convento del Carmo.
La via più breve per salire senza biglietto è la scalinata dietro i negozi di Rua do Carmo.

Praça D. Pedro IV, better known as Rossio Square or simply Rossio, has been the nerve center of Lisbon for six centuries and is located on the northern edge of the Baixa district. It is named after Peter IV of Portugal.
It has hosted bullfights, festivals and even auto-da-fé during the Spanish Inquisition. Today it hosts occasional political rallies and its sober buildings house souvenir shops, jewelry stores and bars. In the mid-19th century it was tiled with black and white tiles to create an undulating pattern. This was one of the first decorative motifs for Lisbon's squares and streets.
In the center of the square stands the statue of Peter IV of Portugal, the first emperor of Brazil, at whose base are four allegorical figures representing the four cardinal virtues: Justice, Wisdom, Fortitude and Temperance, qualities attributed to the Soldier King.
There are two streets connected to Largo do Carmo and whose toponymy preserves the ancient name.
The steep and curving Calçada do Carmo, formerly called Calçadinha do Carmo, descends from Largo do Carmo to Rossio and is one of the oldest streets of the historic route that connects the Carmo hill to the Baixa.
The Santa Justa Elevator (in English: Santa Justa Elevator), also known as the Carmo Elevator, is one of the monuments of the Baixa, the historic center of Lisbon. The ticket office is located behind the tower, on the descent of the Rua do Carmo. Passengers can go up and down the elevator, inside two elegant wooden cabins with brass details.
45 meters high, it is built in iron and decorated with four-light windows, while at the top of the tower, which is accessed by a narrow spiral staircase, there is an esplanade of a room with a splendid view over the Rossio, the Baixa and the Castle of São Jorge, located on the opposite hill, and the Tagus River and the ruins of the Carmo convent.
The shortest way up without a ticket is the steps behind the shops on Rua do Carmo.
