Many amplifiers have a built in protection circuit that disconnects the speakers from the amplifier output if DC is detected due to a fault. DC on speakers will destroy them. Not amplifiers, however, have a protection circuit. In such cases, you really need a kit like this, especially if you have valuable speakers.
The upc1237 is an IC that gives a startup delay (eliminating speaker thump), and also will disconnect the speakers if DC is detected on the amplifier output.
