In this video, we continue our extensive 1957 Chevy/1996 Explorer frame swap project, tackling the next major hurdle in the rear suspension setup. With the trailing arms and shock placement mocked up, we make a critical discovery: the '96 Explorer chassis frame rails kick up unevenly on each side. This means our initial plan to simply flip the stock shock towers won't work.
Join us as we assess this fabrication challenge, explaining why the asymmetrical frame rails necessitate building completely new shock towers. We'll outline our revised plan to create custom, low-profile shock towers that won't protrude above the frame rails, ensuring a clean bed installation later on. While this detour adds extra work, it's a vital step for a strong and proper build. The video also covers the need for a new cab mount crossmember and the next steps for mounting the core support.
