Welcome back to another episode of Shoe Care Academy as Vick Almighty cleans up a pair of the newly released Air Jordan 1 High '85 "Bred" thanks to our good friend Wilson at Archive.
The goal of today’s episode is to show you how to clean a pair. It’s a pretty straightforward process, so you should have no problems doing the same at home.
For this cleaning, we’ll be using the Essneital Kit and a few other products.
Let's get into it.
To begin, Vick takes out the insoles and laces to clean those separately.
It’s onto set up our cleaning station. The dry rack and bowl combo, along with our three brushes, are a must. A towel, a bottle of solution, and shoe trees will also come in handy, along with our shoe cleaning mat.
Vick kicks off the cleaning by dry brushing with the Soft Bristle brush to get that initial layer of dirt and grime off.
You can dry brush the inside part of the shoe as well with the same method.
Since this is Wilson’s pair, we’ll be using the air compressor just to really clean these up.
We know everyone might not have access to an air compressor. The dry bruising method is just as effective; all you have to do is take your time and be thorough.
In Vick’s opinion, this might arguably be the best 1985 retro of the “Bred” 1 from the details to the shade of red and more.
Now, back to the cleaning.
The hardest part of this cleaning will be the midsole and outsole, so Vick will take care of that first and work his way up.
Before the cleaning, be sure to insert the insoles to help with the shape and guide you as a handle during the cleaning.
Since the upper is all leather, it’s a really easy clean, especially since the dry brushing prep work did most of the job with ease.
And since the pair isn’t too trashed, all that’s going to be needed is the soft bristle brush.
Once that’s complete, it’s time to move on to the insoles and laces. With the soft bristle brush as well.
Now that the cleaning is done, it’s time to compare this ‘85 retro with an actual Air Jordan 1 from 1985 and the custom-built-from-scratch Vick and Mark made years ago in the studio. While there are some similarities, there’s also a good amount of differences.
Nonetheless, Jordan Brand did a great job with this retro.
