Come along for a frigid adventure to the top of Wilton Mountain in the Oklahoma Ouachitas. At 2,543', Wilton Mountain is one of the ten tallest named points in the whole range.
I start my journey at the Castle Rock Vista on OK Hwy 1 - the famous Talimena Scenic Drive - and find a path leading from the roadway toward the saddle between Rich Mountain and Wilton Mountain. The path disappears once we cross onto Wilton and we bushwhack a snow-covered hillside and rock field.
The view from the top is well worth the minimal effort it takes to get there. Sunset would be breathtaking. Just watch your step, no matter the season. Ice and snow (in cooler months), rattlesnakes (in warmer months), shifting rocks....they are all things to consider.
I camp on the shoulder of Wilton that evening. The temps dropped to 8º F (-13º C), but I made it the morning and hastily tear down camp and get breakfast at the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge Restaurant. I have a huge weakness for the chocolate gravy, but anything you get there is delicious.
