Plackis volunteered to join the Army Air Corps. After being called up, Plackis was sent to armament school in Denver. After meeting his crew and completing their phase training, the crew was tasked with flying to Wales to began to their deployment. After arriving in Wales, the crew was transported to Framlingham base to join the 390th Bombardment Group. Plackis would take up 3 different position during his tour. Beginning in the ball turret, then to the waist gunner, but he would spend most of his tour as the Togglier. By the end of his tour Plackis had completed 30 combat missions, ending in November of 1944. He describes a shuttle mission dropping supplies over Warsaw. The planes then proceeded to Poltava, Russia. The next leg of the mission was to Italy and then back to England.
