Amerigo "Rick" Bassi was raised in New York. Bassi was drafted and sent to South Carolina for the Army Infantry. It was here that he tested to be transferred to the Army Air Corps and was sent to Texas for navigation training. Bassi was assigned to be the navigator for crew #12, 568th squadron, 390th Bomb Group. He deployed to Europe on the Ile De France and assigned to the air base at Framlingham, England. On his second mission on 3/8/44, his plane was shot down and he was taken as a prisoner of war by the Germans. He would eventually be liberated by Russian forces when the war ended. He provides an excellent description of his time as a POW in a German Stalag.
