The Bigger Picture of God’s Purpose - Genesis

Dr. Rogers continues preaching through The Book of Genesis in this sermon on Genesis 29:31-30:24 entitled, "The Bigger Picture of God’s Purpose."

One of the incredible aspects of Scripture is that there is no attempt to hide the sins of mankind, even the people who are viewed as ‘heroes of the faith.’ Genesis 29:31-30:24 records for us the birth of 11 of Jacob’s sons and one of his daughters…children who came by 4 different women. This passage of Scripture demonstrates the great need of man for God’s written law to govern morality, and moreover, man’s need for mercy because of our immorality. Ultimately, we are in need of God declaring us righteous as an unmerited gift of grace, because we are anything but righteous.

How marvelous that God is faithful to fulfill His covenant promises, even to sinful people! He’s willing to show grace even to the most sinful of people! He’s able to redeem even the most sinful of people!

Sermon Summary: God accomplishes His gracious purposes even through sinful people.

Sermon Structure:

vs.31-35—Jacob’s children through Leah (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah)

vs.1-8—Jacob’s children through Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah (Dan, Naphtali)

vs.9-13—Jacob’s children through Leah’s maidservant Zilpah (Gad, Asher)

vs.14-21—Jacob’s children through Leah (Issachar, Zebulun, Dinah)

vs.22-24—Jacob’s children through Rachel (Joseph)

Three needs of mankind which are revealed in this passage:
**Need #1: God’s people are in need of His written Law to govern their morality.
**Need #2: God’s people are in need of mercy because of their immorality.
**Need #3: God’s people are in need of righteousness to be given as a gift of grace.

Three provisions God has made for mankind through His Son Jesus Christ:
**Gospel Provision #1: God is faithful in His covenant even to the most sinful of people.
**Gospel Provision #2: God is willing to show grace even to the most sinful of people.
**Gospel Provision #3: God is able to redeem even to the most sinful of people.
