KARIONG PS is one of ten NSW public schools in the Solving Organic Waste (SOW) pilot program funded by the NSW EPA. The school started a weekly commercial food organics pick up in late Term 1, 2025.
The school introduced four Food Organics wheelie bins in the playground that are checked and emptied daily by Year 5 and 6 students on a roster.
The food scraps go into a commercial Food Organics bin and are turned into fertiliser pellets and green energy at EarthPower. Resources to support the program are online: edu.nsw.link/sow.
